Fall madly in love with neon! For one special evening, MONA’s classroom turns the lights low and the fires high for a seductively unique neon workshop. Bend your own heart-shaped neon piece (with assistance from instructor Kacie Lees) and then watch your heart come to life while you cozy up with a glass of wine. Students will follow along with an illustrated guide (which visually breaks down each step in the bending process into key moves), work with a bending pattern, and get in the fire to form a unique piece. This four-hour immersive experience will not only teach you the basics of neon, you’ll get to leave with a glowing neon heart, shaped by your very own hands. Couples encouraged! Complimentary wine and beverages. For ages 21 and up.
Instructor: Kacie Lees is an American interdisciplinary artist based in New York. Recognized for her distinctive installations and layered videos, Lees’ perceptual works center around transcendental environments, bringing together disparate elements in a subtle yet consistent effort to show that everything is connected. Lees first learned neon while studying sculpture and video at The School of the Art Institute in Chicago. Later, she taught neon at Brooklyn Glass after receiving her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Light and the intangible are common themes in Kacie’s work and she uses neon to explore them both.
